SOLOMON -- The Solomon Gorillas piled up 611- yards total offense against the previously unbeaten Wakefield Bombers Friday night in a 74-52 victory.
The 3-0 Gorillas were led by senior Mason Demars who found the end zone six times in the contest. Demars had five rushing scores and a four-yard catch from fellow senior quarterback Colton Shirack.
Shirack, playing with a heavy heart due to the loss of his mother on Thursday, went 4-for-8 passing for 77 yards and two scores. He also led the Gorillas in rushing with 206-yards on 16 carries.
Demars toted the ball 25 times for 204 yards and five rushing scores. He began the scoring for the Gorillas on a 45-yard fumble recovery for a Solomon touchdown with 10:48 left in the first period. Following a two-point conversion, Solomon led 8-0 early.
Aylward added 124 rushing with two scores and 16 yards through the air and another score for Solomon.
Shirack hit Mark Aylward for a five yard strike to end a three play 65-yard drive that took 0:58 seconds to give the Gorillas a 16-0 lead after the first quarter.
The Gorillas added 18 points in the second quarter on Shirack 11-yard rushing touchdown and two scores by Demars. The first was a 33-yard scamper on a series that took five plays and covered 64 yards in a 1:12.
Demars then added a Shirack four yard pass play at the 7:42 mark of the second quarter to extend the Solomon lead to 22-0 before the Bombers got on the scoreboard.
Wakefield got on the scoreboard with a 42 yard run following the Solomon kickoff by Zac Meilus to take the score 22-6 Gorillas.
Solomon and Wakefield exchanged touchdowns in the last two minutes of the first half and the Gorillas led 34-12 at the intermission.
The second half saw both teams playing even in the third and fourth quarters.
Solomon maintained their lead by adding 40 points to match Wakefield’s 40 points to hold on for the 22 point victory.
Demars added two rushing scores in the third period and Alyward had a one-yard dive for the Gorillas.
Solomon led 50-28 at the end of three quarters.
In the final period, both teams scored 24 points, although Solomon’s defense led by Aylward with 23 tackles, Michael Brown with 12 and Nathan Webb with 10 held off the Bulldog rally.
Solomon will host Sylvan-Lucas on Friday Sept. 27.
