“It’s time to reflect back on what our founders meant,” Kansas Congressman Tim Huelskamp said of the U.S. Constitution at a town hall meeting Friday afternoon.
When the Constitution of the United State was drafted in 1791, the writers did not intend for every citizen to be allowed to carry AR-15 assault rifles.
Men?
Maybe.
Women?
No.
Slaves?
No.
When the Constitution of the United States was drafted, it said, “all men are created equal.” What that really meant was all property owners were created equal and women and slaves did not own property.
Guns in 1791 were handmade by a gunsmith. They were single-shot weapons loaded through the muzzle and fired by a flintlock. Just a tad bit different than the AR-15, which is a semi-automatic with a 30-clip magazine.
So if you’re shouting at the newspaper, “I will give up my gun when they peel my cold, dead fingers from around it,” you need to stop and rethink that stance.
By now, most of my friends and family reading this are calling me names, but Piers Morgan I am not.
I was in elementary school when I fired my first gun. I was hunting before middle school, although we called it junior high then.
You can add my address to the list of people that own guns. (And if you want to steal them, you’re welcome to TRY!)
With that said, leaders in the United States will do something and gun owners need to be involved in those negotiations. Congress will not stick its head in the sand, hoping the issue will go away. Historically, our lawmakers make changes when the youth of America die and our youth are dying, mostly by AR-15 assault rifles.
A gunman used an AR-15 to slaughter 20 children and six adults Dec. 14 at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.
Earlier in December, a gunman went on a shooting spree in an Oregon mall with an AR-15, killing two people. And last summer, a gunman armed with an AR-15 sprayed an Aurora, Colo. movie theater where 12 people were killed.
I guess it’s OK for old people to get killed. Nineteen-year-olds can go off to battle and lose a limb or two or their life, and Congress says that’s OK. But when elementary kids get killed, something gets done.
I could drive at age 14. I could drink beer at age 18. Was there a smoking age? I don’t remember. Too many deaths of teenagers drinking and driving led to the changing of drinking and driving laws. Too many young kids getting hooked on smoking and eventually dying resulted in a ban on selling cigarettes to anyone under 18.
Changes in gun laws are coming and the gun owners, especially the NRA, need to step up.
Arming the teachers? Please!
By saying teachers need to carry guns is not giving teachers credit for being teachers or law enforcement officers credit for being enforcers of the laws. Both are professions that require extensive training. Having armed professionals guarding schools makes sense if you can find a way to pay for them.
Without compromising, gun control advocates are going to get their way from rifles to video games.
The NRA needs to come up with better ideas.
