A woman from Abilene was hit by a car and died on Sunday.
Samantha Coleman, 31, parked her 2003 Chevy Trailblazer on the north shoulder of 1-70 westbound. Coleman parked on the shoulder because the tread of one of her tires had separated. Coleman got out of the car and stood in the north ditch next to her car.
Meanwhile, Daniel N. Nitchman, 38, of St. Robert, Missouri, fell asleep at the wheel.
Nitchmanís 2012 Ford pickup was going westbward on 1-70, but after Nitchman fell asleep, the car veered off the road and into the north ditch, where it struck Coleman.
A wrecker service from Manhattan removed Colemanís car from the road. Funeral plans are underway with Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home of Manhattan.
The accident took place at 5:17 p.m. on Sunday at milepost 321, 7 miles east of the 1-70/K-177 junction.
