Recently an Abilene fourth grader won the Maple Leaf City Youth Triathlon in Baldwin City.
Her name is Sarah Cooper and she placed first in the 8-10 year old division She is nine years old and will enter the fourth grade at Garfield Elementary School later this month.
The youth triathlon consisted of a 25-yard swim, 3|4 mile bike ride and 1|2 mile run.
Sarah finished in 11:47.
According to her father Chris Cooper, assistant superintendant of Abilene Schools , “She had a very fast swim, good bike ride and good transitions from one event to the next.”
“She has participated on the Abilene Swim Team for two years, “ he said.
Her 12-year-old brother Mark also competed in the Maple Leaf City Sprint Triathlon for adults on the same day.
Mark will be a seventh grader at AMS this year and this was his second triathlon. He placed fourth out of seven in the under 16-year-old division and was the youngest participant in the adult Triathlon.
“His overall time was right in the middle of the pack,” Chris Cooper said.
The distances for his triathlon were a 150-yard swim, seven-mile bike ride and a two-mile run.
There are several youth and adult triathlons in the area that the Cooper family competes in as Chris plans to enter in a sprint distance at Tuttle Creek Lake this weekend.
Mark also competed in the Just Tri It Youth in Manhattan and last year he competed in the HyVee Ironkids Triathlon at Clinton Lake in Lawrence.
Sarah and Mark are the children of Chris and Vicki Cooper of Abilene.
