Viola M. Gibbs was born February 13, 1926 in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Jessie and Edith (Eva) Strauss. Vi was a longtime Abilene resident graduating from Abilene High School.
On February 22, 1946 she married Jacob “Nick” Gibbs in Abilene. Vi was a secretary for Duckwall-Alco before retiring and opening Gibbs Liquor Store in 1962 with her husband Nick. After Nick’s death on October 31, 1979 Vi continued to run the store until retiring in 2006. She was a member of the A.B.W.A in Abilene, the Elks Lodge in Abilene and a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church in Abilene.
Vi is survived by her son Kent and his wife “Sam” Gibbs of Shawnee, Kansas; daughter Nicki and husband “Duff” Dolton of Abilene; sister Nina Towne of Salina; six grandchildren Tisha and her husband Dr. Bill Short of Abilene, Lacey and her husband Dustin DeWeese of Abilene, Jennifer Gibbs of Olathe, Nicole and Brandon Most of Olathe, Jacob Gibbs of Lawrence, Mindi and her husband Mike Chance of Wichita, and ten great grandchildren. Along with her husband Nick, Vi is preceded in death by her son Ron Gibbs in 2001, a sister, Evelyn Duell, brother, Glenn Strauss, and her parents.
Vi passed away Saturday, July 06, 2013 at her home in Abilene.
Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at Abilene First United Methodist Church with Pastor Kerry Coup officiating. The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home. Her final resting place will be in the Abilene Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Scleroderma Foundation and may be sent in care of the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, 414 NW 3rd, Abilene, Kansas 67410.
