Old-Fashioned Fourth at Eisenhower Park Fun for the young and young at heart

Holiday happenings

Abilene celebrated Independence Day in high style with its Old-Fashioned Fourth of July celebration Tuesday. Here’s just a few of the many events which took place. Top left, moving clockwise: Carter Schartzer of Abilene acknowledges the audience during the Baby Beauty contest; Miniature golf was one of several carnival games, provided by Carnival Party Rentals in Manhattan; Kristen McAsey congratulates her son as Carie VanDeCreek hands 4-year-old Quinn McAsey his second place trophy following a pedal power tractor pull of 26 feet, four inches; a 3-on-3 basketball player drives for the basket; Claudia Hess and Olivia Gassman play sand volleyball; the crowd waits for two chickens to poop on numbered squares in “Chicken Roulette;” Jeff Neill, with Carnival Party Rentals in Manhattan, winds wisps of sugary cotton candy at a popular vendor stop; and the water balloon toss was popular, providing a brief respite from the increasing temperatures and humidity.

Inset: One of the “contestants” in the Turtle Race prepares to compete.
